Read Around the Planet Registration Closes January 13th!

K-12 language arts teachers and students are invited to participate in the Eleventh Annual Read Around the Planet 2012 international event that provides an opportunity for teachers and students around the globe to cross traditional classroom boundaries in celebrating literacy and reading. Through the use of real time live point-to-point videoconferencing technology the event connects classrooms (students) around the world by celebrating literacy through sharing their favorite story, skit, poem or literacy works. No cost to participate.

EduTech will again facilitate all North Dakota teacher registration, test calls and event scheduling with TWICE. Teacher registration is available at http://www.edutech.nodak.edu/video/rap/. Important RAP dates to remember:

  • December 1, 2011: Teacher Registration opens
  • January 13, 2012: Teacher Registration closes
  • January 14-25, 2012: Leftover/Late Registration
  • By January 28, 2012: Matched partner details available
  • February 2012: Techs do test calls and teachers talk to each other
  • February 22-March 7, 2012: Connections occur.

A Fantastic Learning Opportunity for two North Dakota Classrooms to Participate in Collaborative Interview with Local Author

North Dakota Classrooms are Invited to Participate in a Special “Author Interview” in Celebration of the Seventh Annual Read Across North Dakota 2012 facilitated by EduTech.

8-year old author, Eva Ridenhour

On February 17, 2012 two North Dakota classrooms will have a unique opportunity to participate in a collaborative ask the author interview with 8-year old homeschooler Eva Ridenhour by videoconference.  This young author, illustrator and dancer from Mandan, ND will share the steps, the processes, and the technology used in her authorship project.  Ms. Ridenhour will be accompanied by educator and mother Gwyn Ridenhour. Participation will fill fast!

Spots will fill quickly!  There is no cost to participate. History of Mexico

Mexico Program January 17 & 18, 2012 (10-11 am cst each day) Session is tailored to grades 3-6. Students learn about the history and culture of Mexico and its people through the art of the mask. Learning activities center around the story of the flag of Mexico and ancient Aztec culture, ancient pictographs of indigenous animals of the New World, and the Spanish influence after the landing of Cortez. Students also are introduced to a modern holiday that ties the two cultures together/ Dia de los Muertos. Three spots/session. COST: $70

Celebrate Black History Month by Participating in Unique Polycom Ask Author Interview

One North Dakota 5th or 6th grade classroom is invited to participate in an ASK Author Interview with Sue Stauffacher and her book Bessie Smith and the Night Riders on February 1, 2012 by videoconference. Stauffachers book Bessie Smith and the Night Riders celebrates Black History Month.

Based on a true incident Bessie Smith, a famous blues singer, shares how she faced danger. Her story is that of empowerment and how she stood up for what’s right. ASK (Authors Specialist and Knowledge) is a process that provides students with the opportunity to interview an author or a subject specialist in the topic they are reading about in a novel, Bessie Smith and the Night Riders. Showcase Your Classroom Reading with other Classrooms. Participate in Read Across North Dakota 2012 Videoconference Reading Activity

Teachers and students are invited to participate in the seventh annual Read Across North Dakota (RAND). RAND is open to K-12 classrooms who have access to H.323 (IP) videoconference equipment.

Now in its seventh year, RAND is modeled after the international Read Around the Planet (RAP) event but includes only K-12 classes in North Dakota. If you and your students have never participated in either event, then consider using RAND as a great way to prepare your class for the RAP event in February and March. Either way you’re providing your students with an awesome way to celebrate reading and literacy with another classroom! There is no cost to participate. This activity was designed to give students in elementary and secondary schools around the state the opportunity to read to each other, collaborate and contribute to each other’s learning in real time, using advanced multi-point video conferencing technology. Interactive video classroom-to-classroom connections will take place February 15-16, 2012. Each connection is scheduled for one hour. Registration deadline is January 25th.

Mandan Health Career Students Participate in Live…from the Heart programming by video!

This past Wednesday, November 9th, 40 students in Constance Keller’s Mandan High School Health Career class participated in an open heart surgery via interactive videoconferencing capabilities with Advocate Christ Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Center for Puppetry Arts December and January Programming Now Available!

Gingerbread Boy Holiday Program December 8 & 9, 2011 (10-11 am and 1-2 pm cst each day)  Session is tailored to PreK-2.  Students witness the classic tale of “The Gingerbread Boy” come to life with brillantly colored shadow puppets.  Story is narrated and performed followed by puppet making.  They also participate in a learning activity about the ingredients in gingerbread.  This is a popular program – don’t wait to sign up.   Three spots/session.  COST: $70

Need High School Videoconference Partner ASAP!

November 16th, 2011

Passaic Valley Regional High School, a NJ MAGPI Member, is looking for some schools to take part in a videoconference on Monday, November 21st (probably around 10-11am). The videoconference will be a discussion with some students visiting from Copenhagen who are graduate students learning about high schools in America. Passaic Valley is trying to set up a virtual discussion for them to be able to engage with schools from other part of the country. It would be a great opportunity to expose your students to an international perspective on education as well as learn about regional differences among schools in the US.
