PBS Has Lauched A New Teachers Website

November 3rd, 2009

PBS Teachers is the national Web destination for preK-12 educators to access PBS’ educational services and a searchable database of more than 9,000 free local and national standards-based teaching activities, lesson plans, on-demand video assets, interactive games, and simulations.

Many of the resources feature PBS’ award-winning programming and content, including on-demand streaming video from select PBS programs. PBS Teachers hosts an online learning community for educators to share ideas, collaborate, and discuss technology and digital media integration in the classroom. Within the community, educators can search for instructional resources that fit their needs; then easily bookmark, annotate, share, and manage their tagged content. The site is http://www.pbs.org/teachers/.

EduBlogs

October 22nd, 2009

Are you and your students interested in doing some blogging in your classroom?  As I was out doing my fall school visits, I discovered that many of my schools did not know that EduTech has a free blogging service. Blogs@EduTech provides an easy way for the North Dakota K-12 community to blog and podcast. Anyone with an EduTech e-mail account is eligible to request blogging service. Each blog has 20 MB of space at no cost. Districts can purchase more space, $125 a year for 20 GB. The space allotted can be distributed at Technology Coordinator’s discretion.

Getting Started

To request blogging service, log into the User Resources page and click on “Blogging” under available services. Once you have blogging service, visit blogs.edutech.nodak.edu in your browser and log in with your EduTech username and password.

Your school’s building facilitator must approve the request before it becomes active.

Teacher training is available at EduTech’s regular training rate of $45/teacher for a four hour block of training.

EarthSky for the Science Classroom

July 24th, 2009

As the beginning of the 09-10 school year approaches many teachers are busy getting their classroom and lessons ready for their students.  Heads up science teachers!  I recently came across a great site,  EarthSky,   that was promoted in the July 23 Tech & Learning eNews. EarthSky is a digital media company advocating science as a vital voice in 21st century decision-making.  Millions of podcasts by scientists are heard by people world wide via EarthSky.

Have your students check out the latest in science news at Science News Headlines.  Or maybe they have a question they would like to Ask the Scientist?  There is another link for them to  follow Chronicles of Science Experiments.  But there’s more,  a special link For Kids as well as a Teachers Center with lots of activities.

Other features:

EarthSky Tonight daily charts and texts for beginning stargazers.

EarthSky Blogs world class science journalists and scientists on science, nature and people

Sky in Google Earth pop-up balloons populated with EarthSky content. Hosted by Google.

Getting Students Hooked

February 2nd, 2009

Last month I had the opportunity to attend a great workshop, “Electronic Excitement in the Elementary Science Classroom”, presented by Allen Anderson of Mill Creek Elementary, St. Johns Co., at the FETC in Orlando FL. He is a firm believer that you need to get students hooked prior to introducing them to a lesson, leaving them curious and with questions. To do this, Mr. Anderson uses movie trailers and video clips. Today movie trailers are extremely popular on the Internet as are free videos. So the next time you have an import lesson coming up that you need to get your students hooked on, find a movie trailer or video clip, download it and use specific portions that might relate to your content along with a statement or question to stir their curiosity. Some web sites he gave us to find movie trailers and help with the downloads are:

FlipVideo, I just gotta have it!

October 8th, 2008

The past couple weeks I have been out in the schools doing some workshops and annual fall visits. It is so fun to see what everyone is doing, especially with their new whiteboards and mobile labs. I’m aways looking for great things to share with others.

Yesterday I attended the Fall Face to Face NDATL meeting in Minot. This is a day for our state’s educational technology leaders to share technology they are using in the educational world. One session that I really enjoyed and want to share with you, was Chris Webb’s, “FlipVideo”. Created by Pure Digital Technologies, FlipVideo is a highly compact digital camcorder that makes it easier than ever for on-the-go consumers to capture and share life’s moments on video. This slim-sized camcorder is smaller than most cell phones, yet provides the simplicity and portability for capturing, editing, and sharing high quality video. Check it out at www.theflip.com.

As I was watching Chris demo the FlipVideo, I was thinking about the many ways students could use this cool device in the classroom. If your students are using FlipVideo in the classroom, please share your ideas with me.

Grant County Anatomy Students Connect via Video to Live Surgery

April 10th, 2008

A common surgery that we hear about today is total knee replacement. However, six classes from North Dakota not only have hear about this, but can now say they actually observed a live surgery of this type. On Wednesday, April 9, Grant County High School’s Human Anatomy class was one of the six North Dakota classes that connected via video to the surgical suite at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio to observe a live total knee replacement surgery. The orthopedic surgeon removed the diseased cartilage and bone from the femur, patella and tibi and replaced these with prosthetics.

Students were allowed to ask questions of the operating room staff throughout the surgery. Comments from students following the surgery: “The surgical team was very descriptive to help us understand what was going on. Very interesting. Not as bloody as I thought it would be.” Instructor Darrell Howard conducted both pre- and post-visit activities with his 28 students.

The other North Dakota schools connected were Beulah, Bottineau, Jamestown, Tioga and Glenburn. Two schools from Ohio, one from Texas and one from Alberta Canada were also connected. This live interactive videoconference was coordinated by EduTech and COSI.

SMART Board™ Podcasts & Lessons

March 20th, 2008

Recently in visiting with one of my colleagues, I was introducted to a great website that contains a weekly SMART Notebook™ lesson, a podcast and resource links. Here is the site address: http://pdtogo.com/smart/ The podcast can be delivered automatically to your iTunes or email address. Past lessons can be searched by category.

Also, on March 7, 2008, SMART Technologies began working with Scholastic to design lesson plans that provide teachers with digital resources to complement their SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards and Senteo™ interactive response systems. Here is what they say “This microsite features SMART lesson activities for Notebook™ collaborative learning software, resources to help with lesson activity creation and links to customizable tools and templates. Math and science lesson activities are currently featured, and additional lesson activity subjects will be added regularly.” Check it out at http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/lessonplans.jsp
