TED Ideas worth spreading

TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences — the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh UK each summer — TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Conversations, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize.

Etsy

Etsy is the world’s handmade marketplace.

Our mission is to empower people to change the way the global economy works. We see a world in which very-very small businesses have much-much more sway in shaping the economy, local living economies are thriving everywhere, and people value authorship and provenance as much as price and convenience. We are bringing heart to commerce and making the world more fair, more sustainable, and more fun.

About Instructables

Instructables is a web-based documentation platform where passionate people share what they do and how they do it, and learn from and collaborate with others. The seeds of Instructables germinated at the MIT Media Lab as the future founders of Squid Labs built places to share their projects and help others. Read more about the history…

ITD – Up & Coming Tech

ITD’s mission is to provide leadership and knowledge to assist our customers in achieving their mission through the innovative use of information technology.

Keeping our mission in mind, let’s look at some innovative uses of IT.  This blog post will be used as our guide or “scaffold” for today’s presentation and activities. [July 19] Our agenda for today:

  • Introductions – share first name, dept./division, role you play at ITD. About EduTech and EduTech Contact
  • Survey of interests – be prepared to share 3 topics that you are passionate about, 1 @ work, 2 outside of work.
  • Sharing what you know about new technologies and trends in tech – since your instructor can’t know it all, let’s map out some new trends in tech and look into the “IT Crystal Ball.” [whiteboard or IWB or Spiderscribe]
  • Videos – innovative, inspiring, challenging…
  • Activities
  • Resources
  • Recap and wrap-up

This is an EduSocial Blog titled “play” you will also find more information on my informal SERT (southeast region training) blog used while conducting training in ND schools. And finally my formal EduTech Southeast Blog where I share news related to technology in education.

Space Shuttle Atlantis-Final Flight WOW!

WOW!  Goose bumps…STS-135 Atlantis Reaches Orbit, after a exciting liftoff.

(Pictures above are computer screen captures taken during launch and set as an EduSocial gallery within this post.)

During the early days of my teaching career, Earth Science was so easy to teach, in conjunction with Space Shuttle flights.  Most students where easy to hook, to engage, the teachable moments seemed endless. We huddled around a 20″ TV, the room was filled with excitement.  Now, I’m watching via NASA’s streaming video while I write…WOW how technology has changed over the last 30 years.

Technology has changed and students have as well, let EduSocial be their modern playground.  Build classroom excitement by involving students in blogging, podcasting, assist them in developing their voice, creating content, sharing content, all while learning together to be good Digital Citizens…the teachable moments seem endless.

July 4th has come and gone, time to start thinking and planning for the 2011-2012 school year. Consider using EduSocial to create a classroom of learning, collaboration, and exploration.

Best to you and your students,  have a great 2011-2012 school year!

Wish to follow STS-135 on it’s 12-day mission?  Continue reading

A non-scientific microphone comparison

So you wish to create some audio, say for a Podcast or another project. What are some of your choices?  Too many to even list in one post, so let’s do some testing with what I have on hand. What I have on hand will not necessarily be that same as you…but the point is…listen to sound produced by different microphones.

Test conditions:

I used all default settings for the applications, i.e. output quality, sampling frequency, mid-range sound input.  The results are qualitative, how is sounds to you,  I’m not an audio engineer but need and want to produce reasonably good audio with a simple process. What is reasonably good to me is probably “terrible” to an audio engineer. 😉  For more on this non-scientific comparison of microphones, applications, and devices… Continue reading
